As the Alexandria Station Improvements and King & Commonwealth Bridge replacement projects progress, limited weekend work is schedule for May 2026. Work will be conducted throughout the day and necessitate a one-block closure of King St. and a single lane closure on Commonwealth Ave. on:
May 1 - 4 (complete)- Evening of May 28 - June 1
- Tentative: Evening of June 11 - June 15
A work window previously scheduled for May 15 - May 18 has been postponed to May 28, with an additional work weekend proposed for June 11 - 15.
These closures accommodate the installation of jump spans to support the railroad bridge crossing King St. and Commonwealth Ave. This allows for continuous rail traffic throughout the replacement of the 100 year old bridge, adjacent to Alexandria Union Station.
A community information session was held on April 21, 2026 to inform area residents and other community members about these impacts and share additional details on the work. A recording of the presentation can be found on VRE's YouTube channel.
