When will service begin?
VRE is in the early stages of researching the feasibility of adding this new branch of service. As such, a date for the start of this proposed new service has not yet been determined.
Where will stations/stops be located?
VRE is in the process of conducting an alternatives analysis for adding this new branch of service. The alternatives analysis involves creating screening criteria for evaluating potential station/stop sites. The screening criteria are being defined, but sites have yet to be selected for evaluation.
Is the project funded for construction?
Funding for construction has not been identified. As part of the feasibility study/alternatives analysis, VRE will prepare cost estimates for the alternatives being explored. The study will also investigate possible funding sources to be pursued to construct the proposed improvements.
Will new railroad track(s) be needed?
There is an existing, single track on the B Line. There is a possibility that additional track(s) may be needed to accommodate joint VRE-freight operations in the future. The feasibility study/alternatives analysis will assess the need to add track(s) to the B Line.
Will the extension go to Dulles International Airport?
No, an extension of VRE to Dulles International Airport is out of the scope of the study.
